We often see autistic children with co-occurring selective mutism. Parents sometimes worry that an assessment cannot be completed if the child is not able to talk to us. This is not the case. During the ADOS-2 sessions, we observe nonverbal communicative strategies and can ask a parent to ask questions if this makes the child more comfortable. Diagnostic decisions are based on all information gathered, including parent reports and school information.
