What is a combined autism and ADHD (AuDHD) assessment?

AuDHD is an informal term used to describe the co-occurrence of autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although autism and ADHD are distinct conditions with separate diagnostic criteria, they frequently overlap.

Research suggests that 50-70% of autistic individuals also meet criteria for ADHD. When autism and ADHD are assessed in isolation, important aspects of a person’s neurodivergence can be missed. A combined assessment allows both conditions to be explored together, with careful consideration of how traits interact, mask one another, or create internal conflict.

Our adult combined autism and ADHD assessment provides a joined-up, clinically sound exploration of your neurodivergence as a whole.

Why choose a combined autism and ADHD (AuDHD) assessment?

Many adults are assessed for autism or ADHD separately and later realise that the assessment did not fully explain their experiences. A combined approach reduces the risk of partial or incomplete understanding.

The benefits of an AuDHD assessment include:

  • One coordinated assessment journey, rather than multiple separate referrals
  • Improved diagnostic accuracy by understanding how autism and ADHD interact
  • Lower overall cost compared with completing two separate assessments
  • A clear, joined-up explanation of your strengths, challenges and needs
  • Personalised recommendations you can use in work, education and daily life

Signs of AuDHD in adults

Adults with AuDHD often describe a lifelong sense of internal contradiction, overwhelm or burnout, particularly where autistic needs for structure conflict with ADHD-related impulsivity or inattention. Many people experience years of self-doubt, low self-esteem or feeling “too complex” for simple explanations.

Some signs of AuDHD may include:

  • Wanting to connect with others, but feeling exhausted or overwhelmed by social interaction
  • Needing structure and planning, but finding it difficult to create or maintain routines
  • Feeling calmer in an ordered environment, while struggling to organise or declutter
  • Finding routines comforting, yet difficult to stick to
  • Difficulty focusing on tasks unless they are intensely interesting
  • Feeling more regulated when fidgeting or moving
  • Heightened sensitivity to sound, light, smells or tastes

Everyone’s profile is different, and a diagnostic assessment explores how these traits have been present across your life.

Who is this assessment for?

Many adults mask their neurodivergence and have spent years feeling different, not fitting in and wondering why everyday life is so much harder for them. Our adult combined autism and ADHD (AuDHD) assessment is suitable if you:

  • Are aged 18 or over
  • Identify with traits of both autism and ADHD
  • Struggle with daily activities, work, relationships or burnout
  • Have previously been told you are “too complex” for a single assessment
  • Would like a clearer understanding of your neurodivergence
  • Need others to recognise and respond to your differences

What does a combined autism and ADHD assessment involve?

Our process is designed to be thorough, supportive, and clinically robust. Assessments are completed by experienced clinicians trained in the diagnosis of adult autism and ADHD and follow recognised best-practice standards. Our process adheres to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for both autism and ADHD, thereby using recognised diagnostic criteria and evidence-based assessment tools.
1

Onboarding

You will be allocated a dedicated assessment coordinator who will support you throughout your assessment journey. They will gather your details, set you up on our secure system and remain your point of contact at every stage.
2

Background Information Gathering and Pre-Screening

You will complete screening questionnaires and provide background information about your experiences. These can be completed on a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

A clinician will carefully review this information and check whether an AuDHD assessment is indicated. If our clinical team feel that the information you have shared with us does not indicate AuDHD, they will discuss this with you. They may feel that an individual autism or ADHD assessment is a better fit, or that no assessment is needed. We do not want you to pay for an assessment you do not need, and we will share our clinical opinion with you.
3

Assessment Sessions

Your assessment includes three clinical sessions:

  • A direct observational assessment
  • An autism diagnostic history interview, completed with you or an informant who knew you in childhood
  • An ADHD diagnostic interview with you

We use gold-standard diagnostic tools, including:

  • Autism Diagnostic Observational Assessment – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2)
  • Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-r)
  • Autism Clinical Interview for Adults (ACIA)
  • Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in adults (DIVA-5)

Different clinicians complete each part of the assessment to ensure a balanced and objective outcome.

4

Multi-Disciplinary Review

All information is reviewed by our multi-disciplinary clinical team, including screening results, assessment observations and history.
This includes:

  • Information provided by your informant
  • Results from screening questionnaires
  • Observations from the assessment sessions
  • Scores and findings from the assessment sessions

The team will carefully decide whether the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are met and what recommendations will be most helpful.

5

Report and Feedback

You will receive a detailed diagnostic report outlining the assessment process, findings, and outcome. A feedback session is then offered to discuss the report, answer questions, and explore your next steps.

What are the benefits of receiving an AuDHD assessment?

Many adults describe receiving a diagnosis as life-changing. It is the first step toward better self-understanding and self-acceptance. Understanding your neurodivergence can help you view and understand your life experiences through a different lens.

A diagnosis can also help:

  • Others recognise your strengths, challenges, and needs.
  • Support requests at work, including reasonable adjustments
  • Access further support or treatment, if you wish to explore this

Your report can be used as evidence in workplace adjustments that employers have a legal duty to consider.
