Stimming in Autistic Children: What It Is, Why It Happens and How Parents Can Respond

Introduction

Many autistic children can be observed to ‘stim’. Parents might notice their child repeatedly flapping their hands, rocking back and forth, humming, spinning, pacing, or repeating certain sounds. These behaviours can sometimes cause concern, particularly when they are misunderstood as purposeless or disruptive. 

However, research and autistic lived experience increasingly suggest that stimming is often an important and meaningful form of self-regulation. Rather than asking “How do I stop my child from stimming?”, it is often more helpful to ask, “What is my child communicating or achieving through this behaviour?”. 

 

What Does the Word “Stimming” Mean? 

The word stimming is short for self-stimulatory behaviour

It refers to repetitive movements, sounds, actions, or interactions with objects that provide sensory input or help a person regulate their emotional and sensory experiences.  

Although stimming is commonly associated with autism, it is important to recognise that everyone stims to some extent. 

Examples of neurotypical stimming include: 

  • Tapping a foot. 
  • Twirling hair. 
  • Biting nails. 
  • Clicking a pen. 
  • Humming while concentrating. 

The difference is often one of frequency, intensity, visibility, and function rather than the behaviour itself.  

 

How Does Stimming Fit Into the DSM-5 Criteria for Autism? 

Stimming sits within the domain of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities within the DSM-5. One of the examples listed within these criteria is: 

“Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech.”  

Importantly, stimming alone does not mean a child is autistic. Many non-autistic children also engage in repetitive behaviours, such as flapping hands when excited.

 

Different Types of Stimming 

Stimming can involve any sensory system. 

Motor Stimming: 

Motor stimming involves repetitive body movements. 

Examples include: 

  • Hand flapping. 
  • Finger flicking. 
  • Rocking. 
  • Spinning. 
  • Jumping. 
  • Pacing. 
  • Toe walking. 

 

Vocal Stimming:

Vocal stimming involves repetitive sounds or words. 

Examples include:

Visual Stimming:

Tactile Stimming:

Tactile stimming involves touch-based sensory experiences. 

Children may:

  • Play with sensory toys. 
  • Rub hands together.  

 

Oral Stimming:

Oral stimming involves the mouth and may include: 

  • Chewing clothing. 
  • Mouthing toys. 
  • Licking objects. 
  • Chewing chewable sensory aids.  

 

Why Do Autistic Children Stim?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that stimming is random or meaningless. 

Research and clinical experience suggest that stimming serves many functions.

  

Emotional Regulation: 

Many autistic children stim when they experience strong emotions. 

This may occur when they feel: 

  • Excited. 
  • Happy. 
  • Anxious. 
  • Frustrated. 
  • Anticipatory. 

For example, a child may flap their hands when they are delighted or pace when they are nervous.  

 

Managing Sensory Overload: 

Some children stim in response to sensory environments that feel overwhelming. 

For instance: 

  • Loud classrooms. 
  • Busy shopping centres. 
  • Bright lights. 
  • Unpredictable social situations. 

Stimming may help them cope with excessive sensory input.

  

Increasing Sensory Input: 

Stimming is not always about reducing stimulation

Sometimes autistic children seek additional sensory input when they feel understimulated. 

A child may rock, spin, hum, or jump because the behaviour provides pleasant and regulating sensory feedback.

  

Supporting Concentration: 

Some autistic children report that stimming helps them focus. 

Just as some adults doodle during meetings or tap a pen while thinking, stimming may support attention and information processing.

  

Communication: 

For some children, particularly those with limited spoken language, stimming can communicate emotional states and needs. 

Parents often learn to recognise differences between: 

  • Excited stimming. 
  • Distressed stimming. 
  • Frustrated stimming. 
  • Sensory-overload stimming. 

Over time, these patterns can provide valuable information about how a child is feeling.

  

Should Parents Stop Stimming? 

Current autism-informed approaches generally advise against trying to eliminate harmless stimming behaviours simply because they appear unusual. 

Research and autistic adults consistently report that stimming often serves an important self-regulatory function. Suppressing stimming without understanding its purpose may increase distress and reduce a child’s ability to cope.  

Many autistic adults describe being discouraged from stimming during childhood and report that this increased anxiety and discomfort.

  

When Might Intervention Be Needed? 

Most stimming is harmless and does not require intervention. 

However, support may be appropriate if stimming: 

  • Causes physical injury. 
  • Places the child or others at risk. 
  • Significantly interferes with learning. 
  • Prevents participation in important activities. 
  • Causes distress to the child themselves.  

Examples might include: 

  • Head banging. 
  • Self-biting. 
  • Repetitive behaviours resulting in injury. 

In these situations, the goal is usually not to stop self-regulation but to identify safer alternatives and understand the underlying need.  

 

How Should Parents Respond to Stimming? 

 

Stay Curious:

Rather than immediately stopping the behaviour, ask: 

  • When is the stimming happening? 
  • What happened just before it started? 
  • Is my child excited, anxious, overwhelmed, or bored? 
  • What might the behaviour be achieving? 

Understanding the function is often the first step.  

 

Recognise That Stimming Is Often Helpful: 

If a stim is safe and not causing distress, it may be helping your child regulate their emotions or sensory experiences.

  

Identify Potential Triggers: 

Keeping a simple record can help identify patterns. 

For example: 

  • Does it occur in noisy places? 
  • Does it increase when routines change? 
  • Does it happen during periods of excitement? 

Patterns can provide clues about underlying needs.  

 

Provide Alternative Sensory Supports When Needed: 

Some children benefit from: 

  • Fidget toys. 
  • Chewable sensory aids. 
  • Movement breaks. 
  • Quiet spaces. 
  • Weighted items where clinically appropriate. 

These should be viewed as additional supports rather than replacements for all forms of stimming.

  

Share Information About Stimming Behaviours:

Explaining stimming to relatives, teachers, or members of the public can help others to understand that stimming is often a form of self-regulation can reduce misunderstanding and increase acceptance.
